French restaurant serving a great sunday lunch

Situated inside the City walls, The Chopping Block is an Anglo-French restaurant set above a traditional Ale House which serves a great Sunday lunch.  Great private rooms available (a favourite for Christmas parties) – the largest for 55 people.  All in a 17th Century Grade ll Listed building.

Our Chef/Proprietor, Michael Hjort, worked for some time as Michel Roux Jr’s Sous Chef & uses his experience to influence our menu. Our focus is homemade French inspired dishes, created using Yorkshire produce wherever possible & served in our relaxed, informal restaurant.

Our dishes are created and developed by our talented kitchen team, then tried & tested by our staff to guarantee real flavour & quality!

The Ale House is our traditional bar downstairs, where we source locally produced cask & keg beers. We support many local breweries & pride ourselves on our selection of craft cask, keg, cans & bottles. We also serve an extensive list of homemade bar snacks, which are available alongside our Restaurant Menus

We are in a 17th century listed building in the centre of York…along with great food, there’s lots of history and a few ghost stories!

Despite the narrow frontage (typical of buildings in central York), the building is surprisingly large occupying the three floors of a historical rope makers and saddlers shop.

If you need a Private Dining Room or space for a group.  This range of diverse rooms both large and intimate, makes us ideal for Groups and Parties.

Especially in our Loft – seating up to 55 guests!
